Frances Irene Winborn

Frances Irene Winborn, age 78, passed away on April 9, 2024, at Miami Valley South. She was born November 18, 1945, in Dayton, Ohio to the late George and Ada Hutson.

Frances was a 1964 graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.  She played volleyball and was a member of the fencing team and a four-year cheerleader.  Upon graduation, Frances attended Central State University of Wilberforce, Ohio majoring in Health and Physical Education.

Frances retired from teaching health and physical education at Dunbar High School in July 2012 after 42 years of service in Dayton Public Schools.  She served as Athletic Director of the Dunbar Wolverines and continued service with the Dayton Public Schools athletic program.  She enjoyed her membership at the YMCA in West Carrolton, OH, where she enjoyed water volleyball and exercise. She also served as treasurer of the Dunbar High School Alumni Association.

As a lifetime member of Greater Allen A.M.E. Church, Frances served as a junior and adult usher.  She also served in the FA-HO-CHA under the director Doris Beasley.  Frances sang in the Mass choir, in the late Joseph Taylor Choir, and with the Shape-note Singers.  Frances was on the Steward Board and Class Leader.

Devoted to her community, Frances was active in her Pineview neighborhood and community groups, while assisting family and friends in every way.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ada Hutson; her husband, Donald L. Winborn; and sisters, Ola Mae and Agnes Hutson.

She leaves to cherish her memory, brother, Oscar (Barbara) Hutson, of Detroit, MI; sisters, Debrice Mitchell, Mary (Michael) Brown, Alice Allen, and Mae Shafeek; nieces, Darralynn Hutson, of Detroit, MI, Melody (George) Evans, of Columbus, OH; nephews, Brandon Brown and Austin Williams; great nieces, Nya Pearl, of Detroit, MI, Breya Evans, of Columbus, OH; great nephews, Brandon Jr., KaSaun Brandon, Omari, Samir and Kyzir. Cousin and best friend, Juanita Frances Marr, of Dayton, OH and Marie Davis of Middletown, OH and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service 12 pm Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Greater Allen AME Church, 1620 W. Fifth Street, Dayton, OH. Visitation 10 am- 12pm. Family to receive friends 11 am- 12pm. Interment West Memory Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc.
